Unpacking: The Power of Small Details
Переглядів 9 тис.2 роки тому
A quick video about boxes and beetles. Unpacking is a tiny marvel of a game, with an incredible amount of care put into every little detail. I wanted to take a look at a few of my favourite details and how they make the whole experience even greater than the sum of its parts. How To Design A Monster Hunter Boss
Переглядів 40 тис.3 роки тому
In which I attempt to justify my destruction of multiple ecosystems for the sake of a fancy new coat. And also maybe talk some more about boss design. It's hard to spoil a game like Monster Hunter but to be safe for curious viewers, this video will spoil designs and mechanics for most of Monster Hunter World and Iceborne's bosses save for those that are major in-game surprise reveals. Metafiction & The SCP Foundation

I’m So Meta Even This [DATA EXPUNGED] The SCP Foundation website is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting and creative repositories of experimental writing and world-building to come out of the internet. This video is my examination of the ways the website’s writers use metafiction and metafictional techniques in service of its horror. For further reading I highly recommend the SCPDeclass...

Hollow Knight: Why The Mantis Lords Fight Works
Переглядів 1 млн3 роки тому
This video contains Hollow Knight spoilers. Hollow Knight is an incredibly well-designed game in every way, but one thing that I'm particularly fixated on is the amount of thought that goes into its bosses. This video is an attempt to break down my personal favourite moment in the entire game, and why, despite technically being an optional boss, it does such a good job at feeling like an ingrai...
Am i really going to watch a 2 hour video at 1 in the morning? Of course I am!
This feels like the thing I imagined when they told me about magicka
15:06 Why is GPZ falling from the sky there so funny to me?
Snill gives me major yandere dev vibes. The hate of mods, and the mistreatment of staff and fans is just so similar
THIS VIDEO HAS 10K VIEWS???? BRO I MISREAD THE FIRST TIME AND I THOUGHT IT SAID 100K. DUDE. YOUR SHIT ROCKS. I ADMIRED THE THUMBNAIL FOR A SOLID 3 MINUTES JUS FROM HOW YOU WERE ABLE TO COMBINE ALL 3 GAMES INTO A DELICIOUS IMAGE seriously, keep it up! I thoroughly enjoyed this!
I have an idea as to what the freeze frame of Sado meant, i think its for the player. Sado seems to be the most aware of the literal player, you, specifically. You, who was scrubbing through the clip, frame by frame. Shes saying hi basically, of course she'd be around for a sudden act (agent of ch-) of violence.
got mad deja vu when you said lazarus in part 2 the hex
2:06:05 love you too my guy, awesome video
this video has NO RIGHT to be this good.
i watched this whole video within a span of a week mostly cause i enjoyed it way too much for it to end this was and probably is one of my favorite youtube videos ive seen in a while i cant believe this video only has 10k views i will rewatch this masterpiece again eventually
midzard of mehgend
you shouldn't, it's not very good
3:40 Arkane 😢
I randomly encountered Inscryption on UA-cam. I clicked on it out of boredom, and fell in love. Now I have my eye on Daniel Mullins. I can't wait to see what he comes up with next!
Great video! Yes, I still have a big Netrunner binder on my game shelf. Also, I was happy to hear a track from Bastion :)
Welcome back Mezz 👏🏻
We do not know who Lou Natas's Dad is, there has been slight references, but none so far, I speculate if Dad is Evil incarnate, and satan just wants chaos, not evil (Like sado), Maybe the karnoffel Code/ Old Data is the way of harnessing his power, and if the OLD_DATA can access itself, since the OLD_DATA seems to have a mind of its own (Try deleting it during act 2 bootup screen, it corrects itself,) that maybe The father is trapped inside the karnoffol code, and the OLD_DATA spreads his influence, which means that P03 has shared pure evil to everyone who downloads inscription ( Me)
Soon wizard of legends 2 🗣️🗣️
aww @ 2:06:06
Its on mobile now with toggleable dash invulnerability
Imagine Sado vs P03 in a new game after she tried to enter in the game
This is probably the first game I’m gonna beat in a long time. I’m using a hybrid crit/melee/signature build with Fueled Berserk, the electric lightning sword special, and Ice Daggers with the Dark Katana and the portal dash. The portal dash was super important because it let me actually dodge phase 3 sura’s attacks. I’m pretty consistent at getting past the first two phases with full health, and I’ve gotten the third phase down to a quarter health on a good run. I really love playing this one. I kinda wanna experiment with more weird builds once I finish Sura off with this one
here is another thematic analyssys of Daniel Mullisn's work that I really liked ua-cam.com/video/5-8GDthC1Zc/v-deo.htmlsi=W_iRsddXVlRnMZUN
Genuis was the right word.
W video
Maaan, I wanna hear those 15-20 minute diversions on Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Digimon! I'm also slightly obsessed with card games and while I know it would've clashed with the video to put in three whole extra video essays right in the middle of this one, I can't help but want MORE analysis. You know you've got something good when the only complaint is "More please!"
Actually try EldenRing it has some interesting elemental reactions in ACT games. Lighting can conduct in water, beasts and some similiar are extra weak to fire.
For Pony Island, Theodore probably isn't the player's actual name. Their alleged killer was a man who never took up the sword, and at the latest, died 400 years before the crusades.
Bro how does this only have 7.7k views? This is a masterpiece! You explained the details and everything inbetween and what the games mean as a game instead of the lore, you compiled it all into one amazing easily understandable video to watch that was enjoyable and could absolutely help people like myself understand the reason why the games were made, beautifully made! Well done!
nah im not even gona watch the video
Great video! Subscribed. I wanted to mention something that you seem to have missed from Pony Island: if you change some of the files, you can get some dialog from Satan that says that sometimes, he "likes to speak in different voices", using the sound effect for hopless soul's voice. The implication being that the whole game was just the Devil tricking you into thinking you were escaping with a friend, when in reality nothing you did was actually hurting him, and you were just playing his game. I would have found that interesting to bring up in analysis
1:15:08 sponsored by WHO ?
AND SOLD!!! (I just had to buy the game)
"When you first step out it almost feels unfair" No, no it doesn't feel it just is. Comes with the territory of the genre; sometimes the RNG of enemy placement is just going to bully you for no reason.
Unexpected Cave Johnson! 🤣🤣🤣
Hello there. Wonderful job of a video. You've reached all that I love about a Daniel Mullins game: art, talent, humor and wisdom. Thanks mate.
Great essay! I think the self-reflection in these games is definitely deliberate (though there may be elements that are just the natural way creators end up in their work). In Pony Island, Satan is petulant, yes, but a lot of it stems from insecurity. I actually ended up feeling bad for him when he asks for more time, and wishing I could comply- close the game and give him a few hours to work on it (which of course, is impossible). The Hex is more obvious. Daniel Mullins had an unexpected runaway hit in Pony Island, and Lionel Snill is a young developer unsure how to handle the pressure of an early hit. It's very clearly a cautionary tale/dark path. Especially since a lot of Lionel's flaws (since he doesn't know the characters are sentient) stem from mistreating the people he works with: needing a gold nameplate to place himself as superior over more-experienced employees, his feud with Carla, stealing pensions. Inscryption has a much gentler take. Kaycee is the most direct developer analog, and a lot of her diary entries in the mod are very direct statements about her love of the game, the creative process, and feeling honored and touched by people's reaction to it. But outside of the mod, all of the scrybes are like different DM styles in a D&D game. P03 is the munchkin player who values minmaxed mechanics over story, Leshy values atmosphere and immersion. Unlike the Hex, the characters aren't hostile to the player, they want to play the game (although all with different ideas how). Leshy *acts* scary in Act 1 because you, as a player, clicked on a horror game and he wanted to give you a good experience. It's why, at the end, he asks to play without keeping score. That's why, though I deleted Pony Island as requested, I feel good playing Kaycees Mod. Replaying Pony Island would be contributing to the Hopeless Soul's imprisonment. Playing Kaycee's mod is me having a fun time playing a spooky game with my friend Leshy.
I actually hated this game, because, while controlling the character felt awesome as hell, the environment you controlled that character in felt messy, bland, and uninspired. What's the point of being an avatar-like badass when the monsters you're fighting are boring, and the place you're fighting them in is like a messy thrown-together construction zone? The dungeon design in this game is like "what if the backrooms were made out of boring stone walls & had holes everywhere?" Also, the lore was a complete snooze-fest. I don't even care about lore in roguelikes, but if everything else about the game (besides controlling the character) is boring, at least the lore should be interesting. The upgrade system wasn't even interesting! In a modern roguelike! The spells themselves were interesting, but that's literally it. Thankfully, the boss fights were fun, but the problem is that if everything in-between the boss fights is boring, the game should just be a Boss Rush like Furi. There are only so many times the same bosses can be fought before they also get boring. The reason bosses in other roguelikes work well is that the player often has very different kits when they face the same boss, but in this game, the only real change to your kit is the limited selection of spells (the other upgrades are just not interesting) Playing it just made me want to play other games, like Gungeon, Hades, Isaac, or even non-roguelikes like Cross Code or Unsighted, which have pretty similar combat systems, and fulfill that feeling of playing as a fun-to-control badass, but without being stuck in a boring & uninteresting world. I'd even rather be playing f***ing Blazing Beaks! I feel like if this game was more similar to Cross Code, Unsighted, or Furi, it'd actually have been a good game, but I guess the creators were incapable of doing anything more than (shittily-done) procedural generation.
Also, another game that I would prefer playing over Wizard of Legend is Magicka (1 or 2). But not only do I have many other games that I would rather play, I also just hate Wizard of Legend in particular. There are many other games I've played that I ended up disappointed by, or simply just never felt interested in playing again, but very few of them made me feel such a sense of spite towards them.
I would love to see them come out with a sequel that I could actually enjoy. The potential is definitely there. I was actually hyped for this game from before it came out, and I was SO disappointed with it when it did come out that it turned me into a hater (which, for me, is a herculean task. Not many games, books, comics, or anime can make me hate them, if I was even interested in them in the first place.)
not even a mention of leshy and p03 divorce canon possibility
Just for this intro I already like it
19:08 if you wanna try a game like that, you should check out Yomi Hustle
live laugh pony island 2: panda circus (watch it not be related to any of the previous games, with red herrings being its own spinoff)
Incredible analysis and choice of music. Thanks so much
One thing I love about his games is that, meta and ARG stuff aside, they're really good games and stories on their own. Characters are relatable, plot twists are memorable, tragedies are palpable. It's not just about messing with your head, it's about giving the players a great, though bittersweet, experience; and Mullins has the writing chops to pull it off.
Fun fact: (also pony island arg spoiler) The hopeless soul and Satan are the same person
Am i the only one who would love to hear all the Magic the Gathering and Yugioh explanations?
If you want another really good roguelike you should absolutely check out skul: the hero slayer
